Welcome to Due Midwest!

Hello there! I’m Erin and I’m the face behind this little blog. I just wanted to say welcome and to give you an idea of what you can look forward to on this part of the internet.

First, a little bit about me. I was born in Minneapolis which is located in God’s country aka Minnesota. I was so lucky to have parents that valued travel and took us on many trips growing up. Before I was in high school, I had already been to different parts of the US, England, Wales, Cornwall, Germany, Austria, Italy, Mexico and Guatemala. I loved seeing new places but my wanderlust would not come until a bit later. After high school, I was ready to get the f out spread my wings and explore life outside the Midwest. I knew I didn’t want to go to a school where at least 10 people from my high school were also attending. I decided to move away and went to college at the University of Colorado (go Buffs!) in Boulder, CO. I knew almost no one in Colorado save for a boy from high school and my cousin who was going to school about an hour away. It was terrifying at times to know absolutely no one but also great at the same time. No one knew the old me so I could be anyone I wanted! This was a huge step for my shy, introverted self.

I had always wanted to study abroad after seeing how great of an experience my sister had in Chile. I decided on Edinburgh, Scotland and it was one of the best decisions I have made to date. To say I loved it there is probably the understatement of the century. As soon as I got to Edinburgh, I had this feeling it was where I was meant to be. Everything about it spoke to me from the first moments I got off of the plane. Living in Europe also gives you the ability to go so many places so easily. I went on a quick, and freezing cold, trip to Stockholm. I went all around Italy, Spain and France during my break between terms. I explored the beautiful Scottish countryside. This is when I became truly hooked on travel because I was choosing where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do.  It was truly the best experience of my life and I’m so happy I got the opportunity. Now if only I had met a cute Scottish guy so I could have stayed there forever…

After college, I decided to go to graduate school in Maryland and got my doctorate in Audiology. When I had to find a job for my 4th year, I made the decision to move back to Minnesota. I didn’t want to compete with all of the other people in my class for jobs in a place I knew I didn’t want to stay in. To be honest, moving back to MN made me feel like a failure. I was living with my parents and back in the place I was so eager to leave only a couple of years before. I moved home to save money but the longer I stayed, the more I appreciated Minneapolis and all it has to offer. I tried (and still try) to get out and experience new things, meet new people and not fall back into the trap of the familiar. With the help of good friends and moving out of my parent’s house, I really felt like I had a place here. I still haven’t seen so many things the Twin Cities and the rest of the state have to offer!

Which brings me to this blog. I used to have a blog which was more about fashion and shopping at thrift stores. While I still like those things, I didn’t want it to be the focus of my blog anymore. I want to get out and explore my city(ies) and give all of you a taste of what you can find here. Minneapolis and St. Paul are like a well-kept secret. I hope I don’t get kicked out for letting you in on it!  I’m hoping for it to be kind of like a travel blog from the perspective of a local. How many times have you tried to research places you are visiting and only find the top tourist attractions or high end restaurants? I’m all for both of those things but unless you are King Midas, you can’t sustain a whole trip on that! Here you will find cool places to shop, delicious places for a bite to eat, fun events going on throughout the year or places that are nearby which can’t be missed. I also want to share my trips with you that take place outside of Minnesota! You know I can’t survive on being in one place for too long! I always try to do a lot of research and do my best to see the places I visit from a local’s perspective. I hope this will help you plan for future trips of your own!

Thank you for coming to my little corner of the internet!
